All of these paintings were painted plein_air, except for the bungalow, which was painted in my studio from a plein-air sketch. Nothing surpasses the "freshness" of a good plein-air painting. The method of painting a "sketch" out of doors, and then using it for a larger, more "formal" painting in the studio, was a typical way of working for the impressionists. When seeing the "sketch" and the larger works hung together in a museum, I invariably prefer the sketch.
