Artist’s Statement

“I began as a traditional plein air painter and continue with my great love of this genre. My strength and natural gift is in my use of color and I find this talent most satisfying and always evolving. I also have a lifelong love of nature, and have become an astute observer. I have painted plein air all over the Bay Area and also in Mexico, New Mexico, Italy, and France.

My farm animal portraits are another strong interest. Animals are chosen for their dignity and individuality of expression. I photograph them and then use the photos to paint in my studio. I am deeply interested in the value of connection between humans and animals and explore this theme in these paintings. Recently I began accepting commissions to paint clients' pets – especially dogs and horses.

I am also very drawn to painting abstractions primarily because of the quality of my painting experience when working in this modality. I believe my intellect became less involved, resulting in feelings of freedom and confidence that I do not always experience as I work.

Reflecting on what connects these works made over the last 18 years, I think it is my personal take on color that is always present. And interestingly, this is the one thing about my art and craft that I did not have to learn from others.

I teach oil painting to small groups in my studio.  And encourage anyone interested in a studio visit to get in touch.
